Zhao Ling, is a full professor and director of the Department of Public Health at the College of Veterinary Medicine, Huazhong Agricultural University. He is also the deputy director of the Hubei Key Laboratory of Preventive Veterinary Medicine. He obtained his undergraduate and master's degrees in veterinary science from Huazhong Agricultural University in 2000 and 2003, respectively. He received his Ph.D. in Veterinary Virology from the University of Georgia School of Veterinary Medicine in US in 2009. He conducted postdoctoral research at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 2009 to 2012. He focused on rabies virus (RABV) and conducted research on the pathogenesis and immune mechanisms of RABV, achieving the following academic achievements: (1) Elucidating the molecular mechanism by which the host's natural immune system inhibits RABV infection through one lncRNA, two pattern recognition receptors, and four interferon-stimulated genes; (2) Revealing three novel strategies to enhance the level of humoral immune response induced by RABV; (3) Analyzing the molecular mechanism by which RABV utilizes host factors specific to the central nervous system to promote proliferation, mapping the three-dimensional spatial distribution of RABV in the brain, and discovering two new cell types infected by RABV. Based on the above-mentioned basic research, the prevention and control of new technologies and products developed by him have been successfully transferred to four biotechnology companies. As the first or corresponding author, he has published more than 60 SCI papers in leading journals in this field, including Cell Host & Microbe, Genome Biology, Autophagy, Redox Biology, eBiomedicine, mBio (3), and Journal of Virology (17). He has applied for 13 national patents for inventions and has been authorized for 7 patents. He serves as associate editor of the English journals Animal Diseases and Frontiers in Cellular and Infection Microbiology. He has been selected as a member of the National Thousand Young Talents Program (2013) and a recipient of the National Excellent Young Scientists Fund (2015).
