Zhou Quan

Prof. Zhou Quan, born in July 1963, is a member of Jiu San Society in people’s republic of China, watermelon and melon breeding researcher, professor in Huazhong Agricultural University, supervisor of master students, director of Hunan Provincial Watermelon Breeding Engineering Laboratory and chief expert.

Since 1988, Prof. Zhou Quan has been engaged in watermelon and melon breeding research and scientific and technological promotion. He has presided over more than 10 national and provincial (ministerial) level scientific and technological projects, and is at the domestic leading level and international advanced level in the breeding of triploid seedless watermelon and specialty watermelon. Breeding research: innovation and development of more than 20 excellent tetraploid watermelon new germplasm materials (new varieties), successfully selected and bred more than 30 high-quality seedless watermelon, more than 20 excellent characteristics of the new watermelon and a number of new varieties of melon, varieties covering more than 20 provinces (municipalities), the cumulative extension of the area of more than 6.5 million acres, the creation of socio-economic benefits of more than 25 billion yuan.

Major scientific and technological awards:

1. Award of "National Advanced Worker (National Model Worker)" and "Hunan Advanced Worker" (in 2000)
2. Award of "Advanced Individual of National Spark Program" and "The Fourth Hunan Provincial Youth Science and Technology Award" (in 2003)
3. Award of "The First Level Candidate of 121 Talents Project of New Century in Hunan Province" (in 2008)
4. Award of "Rural Science and Technology Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition of Science and Technology Specialist" (in 2011)
5. Award of "the first excellent science and technology worker of Hunan Province" and “the second news person of Hunan Province” as well as "Huanai Horticultural Science and Technology Award" by the China Horticultural Society. (in 2016)
6. Award of "Innovative person" of Hunan Science and Technology (in 2020) and so on.

Major academic achievements and patents:

Prof. Zhou Quan has published more than 40 academic papers, authored "Breeding and Efficient Ecological Cultivation of High-quality Seedless Watermelon", and co-authored "Breeding and Cultivation of Seedless Watermelon" and other 6 books. He has been awarded 2 national invention patents, 11 utility patents and 2 new plant variety rights. Hence, Prof. Zhou Quan has played an important role in optimizing the world's agriculture level and promoting the new watermelon and melon varieties cultivated in more than 10 countries, such as India, East Timor, Malaysia, Antigua and Barbuda, and the response has been great.

In the process of "Belt and Road" to support the foreign countries, from 2018 to 2020, Prof. Zhou Quan has participated in the agricultural technical assistance programs for China-Timor Leste, China-Antigua and Barbuda, and has successfully completed the Chinese government's assistance projects, which have been praised by the recipient countries and local citizens, and have made outstanding contributions to China's enhancement of its international status and influence.
